Atrax Yorkmainorum Australian Funnel  Web Spider

Atrax Yorkmainorum is a recently discovered species of funnel-web spider, which was first described in 2017. This species is found in the York Peninsula of South Australia, and it is closely related to the better-known Sydney funnel-web spider (Atrax robustus).

The Atrax yorkmainorum spider is a medium-sized spider, with males measuring up to 3 cm in in length and females up to 6 cm. Its body is black or dark brown in color, and its legs are long and slender. It has eight eyes arranged in two rows, with the front two eyes being larger than the others.

Like other funnel-web spiders, Atrax yorkmainorum constructs a silk funnel in which it waits for prey. The funnel is usually found in soil, leaf litter, or under rocks. The spider is known to be highly venomous, but there have been no reported human fatalities from bites. However, as with any spider, caution should be exercised when encountering this species, and medical attention should be sought if bitten.

It is a fascinating species, and its recent discovery highlights the ongoing discovery of new species in Australia’s rich and diverse natural environment.
